PLEASE NOTE: THE INSURANCE CARRIER FOR THE 8-1-17 THRU 7-31-18 POLICY YEAR HAS CHANGED TO AETNA STUDENT HEALTH. THE BENEFITS HAVE ALSO CHANGED. PLEASE REVIEW THE ONLINE STUDENT HEALTH BROCHURE AND PREFERRED PROVIDER NETWORK TO BE SURE YOU ARE AWARE OF THE BENEFITS AND THE IN-NETWORK DOCTORS, HOSPITALS, AND OTHER PROVIDERS.
The University of Maine System's seven campuses require proof of health insurance as a condition of enrollment for all students fitting the criteria outlined below . In conjunction with this, the University of Maine System is making a Student Health Insurance Policy (SHIP) available. To access a brief description of the Student Heath Insurance Plan select the "Student Health Insurance Plan Summary" link from the menu located on the left of this web page.
All USM students will be required to show proof of having health insurance as a condition of course enrollment if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Undergraduate students taking 9 credits or more
- Graduate or Law students taking 6 credits or more
- All USM School of Nursing students enrolled in Clinical Coursework
- All USM Athletic Training Program students enrolled in Clinical Coursework
- All USM students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Program
PLEASE NOTE: Non-Maine residents taking only online courses, Stonecoast MFA participants and International Students with F or J Visas are not typically eligible and not automatically enrolled.
WAIVER: New Spring and transfer students who already have health insurance coverage through another insurer and do not wish to participate in the SHIP will be given the opportunity starting December 1, 2017 to withdraw from this coverage by selecting the "Waive the Health Insurance" link from the menu located on the left side of this webpage and entering their health insurance information.
Waiver Deadline Spring 2018: February 20, 2018
ENROLLMENT: New Spring and transfer students who want to take advantage of the SHIP and/or have no other insurance coverage beginning December 1, 2017 should complete the on-line enrollment steps to confirm their insurance enrollment and to get access to their ID card and benefits on the effective date of the policy. The Enrollment deadline is February 20, 2018.
